Department of Gastroenterology

The gastroenterology department of the University Hospital St. Marina – Pleven performs the following therapeutic and diagnostic activities:

  1. 1. Ultrasound examination of abdominal organs;
  2. 2. Doppler examination of the portal venous system;
  3. 3. Abdominal paracentesis under ultrasound control;
  4. 4. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) of focal liver lesions;
  5. 5. Rapid diagnosis of viral hepatitis B and C;
  6. 6. Endoscopic examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum - esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD);
  7. 7. Gastroscopy with biopsy;
  8. 8. Endoscopic hemostasis for upper gastrointestinal bleeding;
  9. 9. Polypectomy - endoscopic polypectomy using diathermy and cold snare;
  10. 10. Argon plasma coagulation;
  11. 11. Chromoendoscopy in early gastric cancer;
  12. 12. Endoscopic examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract - ileocolonoscopy - colonoscopy with biopsy of the small and large intestine;
  13. 13. Transendoscopic polypectomy using diathermy and cold snare;
  14. 14. Endoscopic mucosal resection - removal of polyps;
  15. 15. Endoscopic hemostasis with hemostats;
  16. 16. Argon plasma coagulation in vascular ectasia and angiodysplasia;
  17. 17. Chromoendoscopy in early stage colorectal cancer.

Education Activities:

  1. Training in gastroenterology for medical students - 5th year;
  2. Training of trainee doctors in the module Gastroenterology;
  3. Training of trainee doctors in the module Gastroenterology of the Specialist Trainee Program (STP);
  4. Individual training of gastroenterologists in esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy at first and second level;
  5. Individual training of gastroenterologists in ultrasound diagnosis of abdominal organs at first and second level;
  6. Gastroenterology Certification Committee to certify gastroenterologists who have completed the training in items 4 and 5;
  7. State Board of Examiners in Gastroenterology for recognition of the specialty of gastroenterology (as ordered by the Secretary of Health in 2022).

Academic activities: Participation in scientific forums in the country and abroad, dissertation, publication of research papers in reputed medical journals.
